a longform fantasy webcomic

Spindrift is a longform fantasy story that’s being published online in a webcomic format. It’s written and illustrated by yours truly and co-written by the wonderful novelist Charlotte E. English.

Creating a comic was a long time dream of mine. I collected sketches, notes and scribbles for years. The project has officially been in production since March 2011 with its first page going live in October 2011. What started out as a fun side project to work on in-between commissioned work quickly became a big enterprise, with plans of publishing physical books upon completion.

Over a hundred Spindrift pages have been created and published, which all can be read for free at www.spindrift-comic.com.

Synopsis

Spindrift is a modern fantasy story about intrigue, warfare, family, love and betrayal. The story follows the conflict between the close-minded, conservative Alar race and their mortal enemies, the power-hungry Ildrei. And one young woman who gets caught in between…

As half-Alar, half-Ildrei, Morwenna’s existence offends both races. She and her companions must find a way to navigate the conflict – and attempt to bring peace between the two sides.

Process

This monster project has been my passion over the past years. I do all the visual concept and production work myself: Designing its characters, costumes, settings, props —essentially every little detail that helps to breathe life into Spindrift’s world— and finally, taking the script and turning it into richly illustrated pages.
As is most of my illustrative work, Spindrift’s pages are completely digitally drawn and coloured using a drawing tablet and various graphics software.
